Big Tom and the Kansas City Bomber The microphone takes the sound that the singer is making and feeds it through a lead into a mixing machine. There the sound can be manipulated by the sound engineer's knobs and toggles before being passed on to a reel of tape that is two inches wide. The machine can put up to sixteen individual sound tracks onto the wide tape. There are already several tracks on the tape. Rhythm section - drums, bass, guitar, piano.... Read More >> |

Cashmans Diary - Feb 1982 Tuesday 5th: An edifying and pleasant hour with Flor Crowley TD, Cork South-West. We discuss some rather obscure and intricate points of similarity, or perhaps agreement, between Engels and Teilhard de Chardin. Deputy Crowley tells me that such conversation nowadays, is, as a rule, only available inside the portals of Dail Eireann. He is most gracious, and suggests that I am the only citizen in Ireland worthy of our legislature. I am afraid that I blush somewhat at this.... Read More >> |

How the Coalition blew it in 1982 Following a press briefing in the Fine Gael headquarters in the early stages of the June '81 election campaign, John Bruton mused to a friend that if Fine Gael actually implemented its programme in Government, it and the country would be in serious trouble. Bruton was aware of the time-bomb contained in that manifesto but, in the event, he was unable to defuse it.... Read More >> |

Campaign Notebook - Feb 1982 YOU could tell that Charlie was feeling confident - he was making Arms Crisis jokes. He picked up a rifleemicrophone left on the table by a TV crew, cradled it in his arm and trained it on the gathered press, a wide grin on his face. Some of the journalists began laughing and Charlie joined in and there was a big ho-ho , nudge-nudge, wink-wink, until a couple of journalists raised their cameras. By Gene Kerrigan ... Media Commentary: A journalistic duty to critically assess Election campaigns The last election campaign exposed some critical inadequacies on the part of the media, which led to an unnsatisfactory campaign and a confused decision on the part of the electorate. Arguably, the . media's performance contributed to the situation in which the Coalition Government unexpecteddly found themselves in a position whereby they were unable to impleement their election promises - the issue which ultimately led to the dissoolu tion of the Dail on January 27. By Vincent Browne ... Read More >> |

Women and Election 1982 The 1982 General Election could be a disaster both for women candidates and for women's issues. There is, as yet, no evidence of women's groups organising or even being prepared to begin organising for this election. Several of the women candidates who got in on the last count in 1981, largely assisted by the public awareness of women's issues and women's candidates, are in danger of losing their seats. There is a distinct possibility that the number of women elected will be considerably less th... Read More >> |

As time goes by - Feb 1982 Oh, goody! We get to go through all that again. Gee whizz, terrific. Me, I'd made extensive preparations for the budget. Cartons of smokes, a bottle of this, a bottle of that. Heard a rumour that newspaper prices were inncreasing so I began hoarding a stock of the Irish Times. Time for one last night with the elbows down in O'Donoghues before they start taxing barstools. ... Read More >> |

Magill People Feb 1982 The season of Irish Conntemporary Arts at the Third Eye Centre in Glassgow has been causing quite a row, even before its actual opening. The rumpus conncerns the fact that two of the performance artists, Alistair MacLennan and Nigel Rolfe, appear nude during their preesentations. One Glasgow councillor, Bill Aitken, has taken exception to the shows, or rather to what he thinks the shows will be, since he has not actually seen them yet.... Read More >> |

Rigging the World CUp The draw for the World Cup has been so arranged that the final is almost certain to provide a classic South America v Europe confrontaation. This is in itself is no bad thing, but the organisers have gone out of their way to facilitate the passage of Spain, if not to the Final, well at least to the semi-final. Groups 1, 3 and 6 (see table) form one half of the commpetition and Groups 2, 3 and 5 form the other half. In other words one finalist will come from the group Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, ...
