The wealth of the wealthy
How do the apologists for the present economic order justify the reality that 1 per cent of the population have 34 per cent of the wealth of the country, when the value of housing is excluded? Even when the value of housing is included the top 1 per cent holds 20 per cent of the wealth and thehe top 5 per cent holds 40 per cent of the wealth. ...

All Black Ultimatum The word emulating from the Irish Rugby training camp is that this Irish team is the most focused and well prepared Irish side to ever compete at a World Cup. Stronger, fitter and faster they may be, but they must also consider that the teams they will meet in France in a few weeks time are also preparing meticulously, not least two other members in Ireland's aptly named “group of death”, France and Argentina....

Now try to concentrate Notwithstanding the fact that he comes bearing the great gift to popular culture that is The Simpsons, Rupert Murdoch is such an obvious villain that he may distort the arguments about the effects of concentrated ownership on the media. In fact, the academics who study this stuff are by no means agreed on the malign influence of bigger and bigger media companies: some of them, for example, reckon only big multimedia players will be able to rescue journalism from the predicted collapse of print n...

Tycoons Tussle for Media Might
In July, Denis O'Brien's Communicorp added Today FM, FM 104 and Donegal based, Highland radio, to its existing stable which includes Newstalk, 98FM and Spin 103. The deal will give O'Brien dominance of national commercial radio and an even greater dominance in Dublin, where he would gain an 83.75 per cent share of the commercial market, and 46.4 per cent of the total market. That's three per cent ahead of RTE.

Plants: No flies on the Wild Carrot The edible carrot was spread by the Romans throughout their empire, and probably reached our shores with the coming of the Normans. But the wild progenitor of this crop grows all around our shores, and has probably done so for millennia. The tough tap-root of this wild relative smells strongly of carrot, but is tough and inedible. In August its cow-parsley-like flowers are in full bloom, not just on grassy sea-shores, but on many of our inland motorway verges too. The botanical family to whic...

Willow Warbler (Ceolaire sali) Phylloscopus tochilus
Though unfamiliar to most people, the Willow Warbler is actually an extremely common bird in Ireland. Indeed, it is our most numerous summer migrant, with around two million individuals making the journey here each spring; they begin to leave for their west African wintering grounds in August, staging in Iberia en route. The species occurs in all counties, and despite its name is not confined to willows, nesting also in a wide range of young deciduous trees and bushes,...
